The San Diego County unemployment rate for July was 10.8%, up from a revised 10.5% in June and 10.3% a year ago, according to the California Employment Development Department. The county lost 13,100 jobs between June and July. Government jobs were down 12,600. Local government accounted for two-thirds of this loss, primarily because of a seasonal downturn in education. Leisure and hospitality added 1,000 jobs. July's rate compares with 12.8% unemployment for California and 9.7% for the nation.
