Congratulations to real estate mogul Malin Burnham for inadvertently handing opponents of a $432 million city hall a rallying cry. Yesterday (Oct. 22), the corporate welfare mendicants, San Diego Downtown Partnership, held a meeting for discussion of three projects it wants subsidies for: a new city hall complex, expansion of the convention center, and the downtown library. Burnham, in arguing for the city hall complex, and against a vote of the citizenry on the topic, stated, "There's less than 1% of the citizens of the United States of America that understand the complexity in how to put these kinds of projects together, so why would we want to ask the other 99%?" Libertarian Richard Rider saw that victory had been handed him, and called Burnham's ill-chosen remark "the elitist viewpoint." After the event was over, Rider commented, "I would have PAID him to say that." Rider said that after the program, Burnham yelled at him and called him and Councilmember Carl DeMaio "idiots." Congratulations to the Union-Tribune for leading its article with Burnham's remarks, and congratulations to the reporter's editor for letting Burnham put his foot in his mouth.
