The leading indicators of the San Diego economy turned up in April to 100.9 from 100.7 in March. The index had only risen during one month from April of 2006, when it was at 143.8. Building permits, stock prices, consumer confidence and the national economy were all up in April of this year. However, initial unemployment claims and help wanted advertising were down. The index is compiled by economist Alan Gin of the University of San Diego, and has had good predictive value in the past. Normally, one month usually doesn't make a trend for leading indicators, whether national or local. If the uptrend continues for another two months, it would be a very good portent.
