Following a dismal 2008 season, the Padres cut the average ticket price this year by 27% to $20.01, according to Team Marketing Research. The total cost for a family of four to attend a game, including purchases of beer, soft drinks, hot dogs, parking, a program and cap, is $172.04, down 14.7%. The lower prices aren't bringing in audiences. According to USA Today data, the Padres are averaging 25,904 attendance for the first 14 home games, down 14% from the same period of last year. Blame the recession and another lousy team.
There is some justice in the world. The Yankees and Mets scammed taxpayers for half the price of lavish new stadiums. The Yanks raised the average ticket price to $72.97, up 76.3%, according to Team Marketing Research. The cost for a family of four is $410.88, up 49.4%. The Mets' average ticket price is $36.99 and cost for a family of four $258.97. The Yanks have some seats that go for more than $2,600 a game. The team, facing a bleak New York economy and also its own marketing stupidity, has had to lower some prices. Still, attendance is down almost 12 percent from last year. Mets' attendance is down 23.4%, although its new stadium seats fewer people.
Some heartening news: the Arizona Diamondbacks realized that median incomes in its market were the lowest in baseball. So the cost of a family of four attending a game was slashed almost 30%. Attendance is down only 0.6% this year although the team is as bad as the Padres. For Major League Baseball, attendance is down 5.2% thus far this year.
