The unemployment rate in San Diego went into double digits in June, rising to 10.1%, according to the state's Employment Development Department. The figure was up from a revised 9.6% in May. The 10.1% compares with 11.6% for the state and 9.7% for the nation. There were some puzzles in the figures. Accommodation, or hotel/motel industry jobs, rose 1% from May to June during a period when the tourism industry has been dismal. It may have been a seasonal matter, however. Such jobs are down 8.1% from last year. Amusement, gambling and recreation jobs rose 6% from May to June, while the casinos are doing quite poorly. The amusement, gambling and recreation jobs are down 3.8% from a year ago. Again, however, the gain from May to June may have reflected a seasonal pickup. For the last year, total jobs were down 54,700, or 4.2%. Retail was a big loser. Between May and June, there was no change.
