On July 6, the Union-Tribune was scheduled to lay off another 192 employees, according to the Employment Development Department's WARN notices. That was four days ago; the layoffs have not taken place, but rumors have swept the Mission Valley building of another layoff of 200. Employment is now down by more than 50% from its peak. The newspaper had laid off 192 in May. WARN is an acronym for Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification. Companies have to post a notice with the EDD 60 days in advance of a large layoff. This requirement began in early 2003. Since the May layoff was 192, it is possible there is a clerical error of some kind; the July listing may be a remnant of the May layoff. I have not tried to ask the company, since it has not answered my queries for more than a year. I hope to be able to report more.
