Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich and Republican Rep. Ted Poe have sent a letter to New York beggar-bank Citigroup, saying that since it has received $45 billion of bailout funds, plus another $306 billion in loan guarantees from the federal government, it should not be spending $400 million over 20 years for the naming rights to the new New York Mets ballpark. The park is to be called Citi Field. The Congressmen note that the bank has also slashed 50,000 jobs. However, FieldofSchemes.com says the letter will have no effect; the Mets owner would sue. (I wonder if he will sue Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff; he was a victim.) Bank of America, another financial institution on the public dole, is thinking of paying $20 million a year to put its signs up at the new Yankee Stadium. Neil deMause of FieldofSchemes calculates that Yankee Stadium will cost $2.3 billion, of which $1.2 billion will be paid by taxpayers. The Mets' new stadium will cost $830 million, and taxpayers will pick up all but $135 million of that sum.
