The University of San Diego leading indicators of the San Diego economy continue plummeting. According to calculations of economist Alan Gin, the December index was at 108.4, down 2.1 percent from November. But look at the index compared with past years: twelve months ago, December of 2007, it was 128.1; in December of 2006 it was 140.4 and December of 2005 was 143. In December of last year, some of the components were down quite sharply from November. Building permits were down 3.03 percent; initial unemployment claims down 3.49 percent; consumer confidence down 2.95 percent and help wanted advertising down 3.02 percent. There is no relief yet.
