The San Diego County unemployment rate rose to 10.3% in July from a revised 10.2% in June. That's up from last year's 6.3% and above the 9.7% national rate, but below California's 12.1% rate, according to the state Employment Development Department. There are head-scratching anomalies in the data. For example, leisure and hospitality employment gains have ranked first month-over-month for four straight months; there was a pickup of 1,000 jobs from June. To be sure, this is the tourist season, but a jump of 0.7% in accommodation jobs from June is surprising; tourism statistics from Smith Travel Research are consistently grim. Hotel-related jobs are down 9.2% from a year ago; that seems about right. Amusement, gambling, and recreation jobs grew 2.3% from June, despite the woes in casinos, the plunge in Padres attendance, and similar anecdotal evidence. Those jobs are down 5.3% from a year earlier. Full-service restaurant jobs are up 1.1% from June and down only 1.3% from a year ago -- a seeming anomaly. Newspaper and periodical jobs are down 4% from June and 14.3% from a year ago. Construction jobs are up 0.6% from June but down 13.5% from the previous 12 months.
