On Friday afternoon, Bob Bolinger, president/market manager of Clear Channel in San Diego, admitted to members of the local advertising community that three family members of an on-air personality of KLSD-AM (XTRA Sports 1360), a sports talk station, filled out Arbitron rating forms. That is verboten. Family members of employees are not permitted to participate in Arbitron ratings, and this is sacrosanct and well-publicized within the industry. This morning (Sept. 23), Arbitron put out a news release saying that KLSD-AM ratings had been affected by participation of an employee and his family. It did not identify the radio personality, and wouldn't do so to me. In his Friday letter, however, Bolinger said, "Clear Channel Radio San Diego agrees with the Arbitron policy and...has moved swiftly to correct the situation. Effective immediately the on-air personality in question has been removed from the on-air shift and will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including dismissal." On Saturday, Union-Tribune sports media columnist Jay Posner said that Dave Palet, who hosted a sports talk show on the station, had been fired by XTRA Sports 1360. Bolinger did not return calls and Jeremy Pfouts, an anchor reporter for the station, said he cannot comment. Palet could not be reached for comment. The question is what Arbitron will do about the ratings of KLSD (XTRA Sports 1360) and of other stations in the market. That will be revealed Friday, Sept. 26, according to Arbitron.
