The Audit Bureau of Circulations released circulation figures for U.S. newspapers this morning (Oct. 27). For the six months ended September of 2008, U-T daily (Monday-Friday) circulation dropped by 3 percent to 269,819. Sunday circulation declined 4.7 percent to 342,384. Nationally, the average daily decline was 4.6 percent, and Sunday decline 4.8 percent. The North County Times's daily circulation held up well, dropping only 1 percent to 85,970. However, Sunday dropped 5.4 percent. Circulation at the Los Angeles Times for the period dropped 5.2 percent daily and 5.1 percent Sunday. The Orange County Register was the loser: its daily circulation plummeted 15.2 percent and Sunday 8.2 percent. San Diego County is the 17th largest market in the U.S. The Union-Tribune came in 23rd in circulation among 25 dailies. If you eliminate the first two, USA Today and the Wall Street Journal, which are national publications, the Union-Tribune is 21st in circulation while its metro area is the 17th largest.
