San Diego County continued to lose jobs in September, as non-farm employment dropped 5,100, or 0.4 percent from a year ago, according to the California Employment Development Department. Jobs were down 0.1 percent, or 1,300 jobs, from August. The September unemployment rate was 6.4 percent, down from a revised 6.5 percent in August, but well above 4.8 percent a year earlier. Employment in building construction was down 12.4 percent from a year earlier, while real estate jobs were down 7.1 percent and financial jobs down 5.7 percent. On the other hand, wireless telecom jobs picked up 8.3 percent from September of 2007. Leisure and hospitality jobs were down 3,700 jobs from August. Such jobs normally decline from August to September as the busiest tourist season comes to an end.
