The astoundingly stupid report by the Attorney General's office, supposedly showing that Mayor Jerry Sanders is not corrupt, may put AG Jerry Brown in San Diego headlines for some time. (Can you imagine what would happen if every time one metro politician called another corrupt, the AG would come in to issue a report? In a state that is basically broke?) Why did the AG's office do such a dumb thing? Was it a favor for Brown's wife, Anne B. Gust, a director of Jack in the Box since 2003? (I doubt it, but who knows?) She is an unpaid special counsel in the AG's office with a broad mandate to reorganize the place, which must be a zoo if wants to referee political polemic in every town in the state. Gust is a former honcho of The Gap and a lawyer with a couple of law firms with important San Diego connections, including Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe. Another Jack board member is Michael E. Alpert, husband of liberal former state legislator Dede Alpert.
