San Diego got everything it wished for at the U.S. Open last week. Tiger Woods was in the tournament all the way, including a final 18-hole playoff that went 19 holes on Monday. Sunday's TV audience was the highest overnight rating since the Open of 2002, which Tiger had also won. The announcers raved about San Diego (although talk of the marine layer and June gloom may not have thrilled civic boosters.) But today (June 18), Tiger announced he will have to have major knee surgery and will miss the rest of the 2008 season. As revealed earlier in the Reader, Tiger's absence will knock 10 to 15 percent, and often much more, off the TV audiences in remaining tournaments.
