Straight-Talking Financial Journalist Herb Greenberg Leaving the Field To Go into Research

Carmel Valley's Herb Greenberg, a columnist for the Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones's online MarketWatch, is leaving print journalism May 1 to set up an independent research firm with Debbie Meritz, an analyst/accountant who has been a good source for him in the past. Greenberg will continue to appear on CNBC. The firm will be based in Maryland, but Greenberg will remain living in Carmel Valley. Greenberg says his leaving Dow Jones has nothing to do with the shakeups engineered by new owner Rupert Murdoch, domineering head of News Corp. "Just the opposite," says Greenberg. "My boss at MarketWatch thinks I'm making a colossal mistake." His reasons for changing careers: "I'm not getting any younger, I like upside, I have a simmering entrepreneurial spirit and the time and partner just felt right." Greenberg has built a reputation in financial journalism for telling it like it is. Therefore, he has made some enemies, many of whom belong in jail. Greenberg will be sorely missed.
