The Union-Tribune suddenly slashed its newshole by 20 percent on Thursday of last week -- effective immediately. Stories in the works for Sunday were eviscerated. The Monday personal technology section, sports features and financial agate were slashed without notice. The word to cut had come from Gene Bell, president of the U-T, who is insensitive to public opinion. The U-T's daily circulation has plunged from 380,000 in 2000 to 275,000 -- a much steeper drop than other metropolitan dailies are experiencing. There are 350 people involved in newsgathering. Under the old rules of thumb, there should be only 275. Because of the sudden, dire nature of the newshole slash, employees expect sudden personnel cuts. (The 350 is down 35 from November of last year.) There are rumors that personnel cuts may come today (Tuesday).
