Pro sports teams always have a new reason for wanting a taxpayer handout. The San Antonio Spurs basketball team plays in an arena that is only five years old. The team wants Bexar County to extend $75 million to $164 million in car rental and hotel taxes to make improvements to this arena. Reason: "to keep the Spurs compettive." But the team has won three of the last five National Basketball Association titles. It smacks of the San Diego Chargers. It wants a new stadium to keep the team competitive. That is nonsense. Because of revenue sharing and salary caps, there is no relationship between stadiums and the ability of the team on the field in the NFL. Besides, the Chargers are supposed to have the best talent in the NFL. They are playing in one of the older stadiums. If they get a new stadium (whether in San Diego or L.A.) you can bet they will be begging for more money almost as soon as the facility is built.
