In an op-ed in the Oct. 7 Los Angeles Times, Prof. Steve Erie of UCSD and Vice President Norma Damashek of the League of Women Voters write that Mayor Jerry Sanders's Charter Reform Committee is a "civic sham." The mayor has stacked the committee with "downtown lawyers and lobbyists," say the authors. (They have said the same thing in the Reader several times.) Under the proposed charter, the mayor would control growth and development, appoint the city auditor, and get more appointment and veto powers. "San Diego has an ignominious history of backroom deals that benefit developers and business interests," say the authors, and Sanders will keep the ignominy going.
