Mayor Sanders's scheme to pack a so-called charter review committee with pro-establishment lawyers and lobbyists has thus far not been detected by the San Diego public. A poll by the San Diego Institute for Policy Research reveals that less than 2 percent of San Diegans have paid close attention to the stacked committee. Almost 49 percent said they had heard nothing about it. Among several things (most of them dangerous), the committee wants the strong mayor form of government to stay permanent. Sixty percent want the size of the council expanded and fifty-four percent want a restriction in the ability of that council to override a mayoral veto. This is just what the mayor and the puppeteers controlling him, the real estate development industry, want.
