Official statistics from the Audit Bureau of Circulations released Monday morning show the Union-Tribune's average daily circulation plummeting 8.53 percent to 278,379 for the six months ended September 30, compared with the previous six-month period. Only one paper in the top 25, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, did worse, dropping 9.08 percent. The Union-Tribune's Sunday circulation plunged 7.93 percent to 359,355. Only two papers in the top 25 did worse in Sunday circulation: Atlanta, down 9.16 percent and Denver's combined papers, down 13.52 percent. Although the San Diego metro area is the 17th largest in the nation with a mid-2006 population of almost 3 million, the U-T is 24th in daily circulation (22nd if USA Today and the Wall Street Journal are eliminated.) The U-T is not even in the top 25 among Sunday papers. This is more indication that the paper is doing worse than its peers. "Other paid" circulation on Sunday was 11,417 and daily 17,823. This category includes newspapers that are distributed free to non-subscribers. The U-T has been trying to lower that number.
