According to a reliable source, 29 people in the Union-Tribune newsroom took the voluntary buyout abruptly offered by the company Dec. 3. The U-T wanted 43 out; if that's still the plan, 14 people will get the involuntary boot, probably before the year is out. Among those leaving are some of the newspaper's top reporters and editors, including Craig Rose, who covered biotech and utilities honestly and skillfully; Mark Sauer, who covered a number of San Diego's notorious crimes; Kelly Thornton, who covered some of the highest-profile scandals, and, like Sauer and Rose, uncovered some scandals; Sandra Young, who quarterbacked the business department; Michael Kinsman, former business writer/columnist and obit writer; Diane Lindquist, who covered Mexican business; Ann-Marie Welsh, arts critic, Carl Larsen, real estate editor, and Maureen Clancy, food editor.
