Mayor Jerry Sanders keeps talking about his commitment to pension reform, but actions by underlings belie his promises. For example, the Internal Revenue Service recently concluded that one of many failures by the City pension system was its granting of retirement benefits to labor union heads for time they spent working for the union, not the City. For example, Ron Saathoff, longtime head of the firefighters union, is being prosecuted by both the district attorney and U.S. attorney's office because of his receiving of such benefits. On May 19 of last year, the board of the pension system voted to grant City benefits for union presidents. Three members opposed the move. Jo Anne SawyerKnoll, now Sanders's ethics chief, voted in favor of the action that has now been thumbed down by the Internal Revenue Service, as well as prosecutors.
