Homebrews for guide dogs

Local Habit hosting homebrew-driven fundraiser for service dog trainers

On Saturday, February 23, the statement “this restaurant’s gone to the dogs” will take on new meaning when Local Habit (3827 Fifth Avenue, Hillcrest) holds an event benefitting New Leash on Life, a non-profit organization raising puppies to serve as guide dogs for the blind. It’s the second craft beer-related fundraiser the organization has held in the past year, and quite a creative one at that. In addition to donating 10 percent of the day’s food and drink proceeds to New Leash on Life, Local Habit will hand over all donations received in return for glasses of a pair of homebrews offered up over the course of the event.

The first of those brews is a Belgian-style tripel aged in Heaven Hill rye barrels for 90 days. Coming in at 10% ABV, it’s the creation of award-winning QUAFF (Quality Ale Fermentation Fraternity) members Chris Bartik, David Crane, Jeremiah Cutting, Daron Giles, Brett Goldstock, and Michael Habrat. The other homebrew is a Roggenbier made with a malt bill that’s roughly 50% rye malts. That beer won a gold medal at the 2012 America's Finest City Homebrew Competition in the German Wheat and Rye Beer category. The going rate for those beers will be five dollars for a 10-ounce pour.

Also on-hand to support the cause will be representatives from local business, DoggieBeerBones, who will be handing out complimentary samples of their dog bones, which are made with spent grain produced during the brewing process, for attendees to take home to their own canines. The event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Don’t have a dog? That’s OK. There will be service dogs present to gobble up the petless’ share.
