San Diego Public Market slated for opening on September 12

The San Diego Public Market will open for business on Wednesday, September 12th, at 9:00 am, giving us one more reason to love our city.

SDPM, located at 1735 National Avenue in Barrio Logan, is the brainchild of local entrepreneurs Catt White and Dale Steel. After ten years of seeking both private investors and municipal funding without success, the two decided to take a more grass roots approach to raising capital. Using social media, word of mouth advertising and the internet funding platform Kickstarter, they raised $146,000 in just over two weeks, giving them the needed funds to open the first project phase, the farmer’s market area.

The farmer’s market will be open on Wednesdays and Sundays from 9 am till 2 pm. On board to date are Suzie's Farm, Avocado Lovers, Vang's Farm, Descanso Ranch chickens, HOPKINS AG almonds, Gilbert Quintos, and Nicolau Farms, food vendors Miss Sushi San Diego, Gourmet Tamales, Masala Cottage and Casanova's Fish Tacos, with accordion sensation Smilin’ Jack providing entertainment.

Future plans include a permanent indoor market, artists and craftsmen booths, a commercial kitchen and classrooms for cooking classes, urban agriculture workshops and small business mentorship programs. Areas will be available for private events, chef’s tasting dinners, and movie nights.
