Bertrand at Mr. A's: On top of the world! (For $11.85)

Who can afford Bertrand at Mr. A's? All of us - at the witching hour

“We only go to places with views,” says Jonathan.

He and Cassandra are right next to me at the bar, chomping away at swordfish sliders and Kobe beef sliders ($7 each for three each).

“Number three is the roof of the Fish Market, #2 is Candelas on Coronado, but no contest, this is number one.”

He’s gotta be right. We're in Bertrand at Mr. A’s (2550 Fifth Avenue, twelfth floor, Bankers’ Hill, 619-239-1377).

Never thought I’d see myself here and staring out at that view, looking down at planes coming in to land at Lindbergh Field. Sun’s setting and looking even better from up here than from Bay level.

“It’s the 12th floor, but it feels much higher,” says Sean, the savvy bartender, “because the whole building is built on a hill.”

Guess that’s Bankers’ Hill we’re talking about. Whatever, it’s makes you goggle-eyed.

Only here because it turns out they have a happy hour (2:30 – 6:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. Nb. HH stops for month of December). And the deal is $7 appetizers like swordfish or ahi or beef sliders, or the other usual suspects like truffle fries or calamari or tempura mixed veggies.

Wines are $6, and beers mostly $4, so you can get outa here for about $12 plus tip.

I get the swordfish sliders and a Stone IPA. My bill is $11.85.

And yes, the sliders are kinda petite, shall we say, but the swordfish tastes great and it all looks beautiful.

Jonathan and Cassandra's sliders

Bonus: you can also HH out on the deck, if you can find a table.

Bonus: You’re surrounded by Beautiful People

Maxxo bonus: You’re looking out to the whole world as the day melts dazzlingly into night.

You can even wave to the folks on Catalina Island, I swear.
