Star Chef Gavin Kaysen Returning to Send El Biz Off in Style

Earlier this week, I shared news former Quarter Kitchen chef Nathan Coulon is returning to San Diego to helm Fashion Valley's upcoming True Food Kitchen. Now, I have more homecoming news to share.

Gavin Kaysen, the chef at New York City's esteemed Café Boulud, is coming back to the kitchen at the Rancho Bernardo Inn's fine dining restaurant, El Bizcocho, which he commanded from 2003 to 2008. This, however, will be a one-night-only affair versus a reinstallment.

On June 7, Kaysen and the man who hired him, Tom Dowling (executive chef at El Biz from 1986 to 1987, and the resort from 1987-2008), will collaborate with current RBI executive chef Nicolas Bour for a five-course dinner titled "El Bizcocho's Epilogue." The meal will be designed to pay homage to this venerable eatery; one of the longest continually operating gourmet spots in the county.

The reason for such retrospection - RBI is closing the venue for a $2 million renovation. Once that's complete, the space will reopen as a completely different signature restaurant for the resort. It's unknown exactly when the doors will close so construction can begin, but it will likely occur before the year, or possibly the summer, is through.

During his time at El Biz, Kaysen competed on Team USA at the Bocuse d'Or culinary competition (he's the coach for the 2013 US team), competed on Food Network's "The Next Iron Chef," and earned his appointment to his current Michelin star-studded digs. No wonder he harbors such affection for his old stomping grounds. This should be a tasty and fitting way for him, and others, to say good-bye.

Click here for a look at the menu.

El Bizcocho's Epilogue will include a canapé reception starting at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Reservations are available by calling the restaurant at (858) 675-8550. Proceeds from the dinner will be donated to Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center in National City.

Dishes from the Epilogue event will also be offered on the everyday menu until El Bizcocho it shuts down for good. Rancho Bernardo Inn is located at 17550 Bernardo Oaks Drive.
