Tacos with a View: Mitch's Seafood

Saturday is shopping day, and after the farmer’s market, Trader Joe’s, Sprouts/Henry’s and, possibly, Costco, I’m always ready for a beer and some lunch. This week’s errands took us to Point Loma, so that means a stop at Mitch’s Seafood.

Mitch’s Seafood is family owned, and their seafood is almost exclusively from San Diego and Northern Baja waters. Non-seafood items are often locally sourced as well.

The restaurant is set up like most places in the area; order at the front, have a seat either inside or on the patio, enjoy the view and your beverage of choice until your freshly cooked meal is brought to you.

John and I were in the mood for fish tacos - your choice of fish depends on the day’s catch. The beer battered fish was rock cod ($3.00 each), so we both ordered one of those. My grilled fish selection was halibut; John got the yellowtail ($3.50 each).

Both baskets were just what you’d expect, in a good way. Crispy, golden brown beer batter that isn’t too heavy or greasy. Thinly shredded cabbage, crunchy salsa cruda and a drizzle of lime crema. Nice contrasts in taste and texture, thick flakes of hot fish against the cold crunch of the cabbage and tangy salsa.

The grilled fish was a winner too. It had a great sear and nicely caramelized outsides, moist and tender insides. It made me forget all about the long lines in Costco.

Mitch’s Seafood also serves various platters, salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers and chicken. On Tuesdays they feature discounts on tacos and bottled beer.

The view, of course, is gratis.
