I was just cruising through Golden Hill and I spotted the "now serving fruit salads" sign from the road. The shop is in a strip mall on the corner of Broadway and 25th. Fortuitously, I was hungry and I had been thinking about a fruit salad, which is just about my favorite snack in the world of late.
Subs 2 Go is a miniature operation that's just a sandwich counter, a blender/juicer, and a few reach in coolers for drinks. The guy making sandwiches and assembling the fruit salads was friendly and efficient. It took all of a couple minutes for him to fill the other customers' orders and get to me. The sandwiches are almost laughably inexpensive — six inch subs start at $2.99. My expectations were as low as the price, but as I watched the sandwich man assemble my Italian sub, I got excited by the heaps of vegetables he was piling onto the sandwich.
It turned out to be fantastic! The optionally whole wheat bread, which I found to my great surprise is baked fresh in the shop, was fresh and chewy. There weren't a lot of cold cuts on there, which hardly stings for $2.99, but the massive serving of veggies was just awesome and the whole thing was assembled with fastidious care so that it didn't fall to pieces when I took a bite.

The fruit salad was equally delightful. Cottage cheese, granola, raisins, coconut, and a drizzle of honey; all of it layered on top of fresh fruit. There was a high ratio of melon to other fruit, which some people hate but I don't mind, and lots of strawberries and bananas. The medium size ($5) was enough for one person, but they also had a large that would be good for sharing at $7.

Also on the menu, a "bionico" salad substituted whipped cream for the cottage cheese. If it was purely snack time and not lunch, I could really get into that. They also had fresas con crema (strawberries and cream), but that's definitely dessert food!
It seems like Subs 2 Go is even open for breakfast, if the breakfast sandwiches on the menu are any indication, but I'm guilty of failing to ask the staff for the hours of operation before I left. It's no surprise that the shop doesn't exactly have a high-concept website! The best I can say is that Subs 2 Go is open "normal" hours.
