Calling John Montagu: Mama's Grill

It's a good thing that John Montagu liked to play cards and talk. At least, so the legend goes. As a result, I can eat good things stuffed into bread every day for the rest of my life and never get bored.

Speaking of sandwiches, Mama's Grill in Kearny Mesa is sandwiched between several restaurants in a strip plaza at Clairmont Mesa and Ruffner. It's pretty no-frills, just walk up to the counter, order, enjoy the free wifi, and before you know it, you've got Ma's Muffuletta ($7.55) in front of you.

I love the dark grill marks and the crunchy crust on the bread. Not too thick, though, the meats and cheeses stay put when you bite into it. Layers of capicola, proscuitto, mortadella, provolone, mozzarella (although emmentaler would be more authentic) and Sicilian olive mix (on both crusts, yay!). It's warm and juicy, crunchy and soft, salty and smooth. And big. I have to take half home with me.

Other sandwich options are The Achilles Meal ($6.55, gyro meat, feta, and toppings in a pita), The Wise Guy ($8.55, meatballs, mozzarella, genoa salami, parm, marinara on garlic sourdough) and The Boulevard ($7.55, roast beef, bacon, lemon dill cream cheese, pepperoncini, sprouts on sourdough). Veggie options are available too.

If sandwiches don't appeal, Mama's Grill has breakfast (7am-10am only), salads, and a pickle barrel. For just $.99, you can pick up a huge dill to go with your meal. Or, for a snack later, as I did.

Thank you, Lord Montagu, thank you.
