When John and I were having breakfast at the Fig Tree Cafe recently, we noticed this hanging on the wall.
While I wouldn't say we're coffee snobs, we do love a good cup. We'll go so far as to roast our own beans when we're not too lazy. I mentioned that Cafe Moto supplies a number of the restaurants and cafes that we frequent. That perked (no pun intended) his ears up, and he asked our waitress if they sell to the public. They do, so as soon as we were done eating, we headed down to Barrio Logan to check them out.
I'm not sure what I was expecting, but this wasn't it. I mean that in a good way. What a great find for a coffee or tea lover.
I got a small regular coffee ($1.75), John got a flat white ($2.75). A flat white, which originated in Australia and New Zealand, is similar to a cappuccino, but instead of using the dry white foam from the top of the frothing pitcher, the barista uses the creamy micro foam from the bottom, pouring it over a single or double espresso. Nice artwork, too.
I'm not fond of milk in coffee, or milk in general, but this could convert me. It was delicious, perfectly frothed, and the milk wasn't scalded (as it is far too often in other places). It just shows you how an educated barista can make all the difference in how your drink tastes.
Coffees in hand, we headed to the back of the place, where there's a little museum of sorts with all kinds of cool, vintage coffee and tea roasters, grinders, percolators, scales, what have you.
Next, there's the roasting area. That's some heavy duty equipment there.
Finally, there's a retail store, where you can buy coffee and tea from nearly any part of the world where coffee and tea is grown. You can also buy tisanes and herbals, flavorings, syrups, filters, replacement parts for your home or commercial equipment, coffee makers, tea pots, gift baskets, green coffee beans, you name it. We discovered that they sell a shade grown coffee we enjoyed in the Lago de Atitlan region of Guatemala, much to our delight. It's all reasonably priced.
