Tacos and Opera: Los Pueblos

Finding a good place to stop for lunch between errands can be challenging, especially when your errands take you to places that aren’t exactly known for tasty nibbles. So I was delighted to find Los Pueblos in the shopping center best known as “the Walmart plaza” in Kearny Mesa.

Los Pueblos is run by the same folks who brought us the popular Chilangos Mexico City Grill in Hillcrest, which closed just over a year ago. They’ve been in this location since December 2011.

It’s a large, pretty place, full of bright colors, with lively artwork and tapestries on the walls, and Andrea Bocelli on the soundtrack.

Menu items include tortas, burritos, tacos, quesadillas and huaraches, as well as soups and salads. There are quite a few vegetarian options.

Jeremy, the manager, pointed out that nearly everything on the menu can be customized to your taste.

I chose one of the daily specials, three rolled tacos (chicken or potato), rice, beans and agua fresca, all for $7.95.

The tacos were really good, fried super crunchy but absolutely greaseless, with lettuce, tomato, guacamole and crema on top. The chicken taco was full of tender white meat, savory and juicy. It was delicious with the tangy roasted salsa verde. The potato taco was great too, with meltingly soft fried potato chunks inside. A hit of the spicy rich chipotle salsa was the perfect complement to the smooth potato.

The beans and green rice with peas were pretty good too. I like my refried beans a little chunky, with a good bit of seasoning, and this fit the bill.

The tamarind agua fresca was refreshing, homemade without concentrates or artificial flavors. Also on the beverage menu is café de olla, with cinnamon, clove, orange peel and piloncillo, made in the traditional clay pot, for just $2.50.
