Le Dîner à San Diego: Evening in White

Le Dîner à San Diego will debut in San Diego this May. Inspired by Dîner en Blanc, the refined flash mob pop-up picnic held annually in Paris since 1988, Le Dîner à San Diego will be held on May 25, 2012 from 6:00 – 10:00 pm, at an outdoor location to be disclosed just one hour before the event begins.

While the venue remains a mystery, it is typically an iconic place within the host city, close to public transportation.

The first Dîner en Blanc was hosted by François Pasquier when he returned to Paris to live and wanted to reconnect with old friends by hosting a dinner party. When the guest list got out of hand, he held it at the Bois de Boulogne and asked everyone to dress in white so as to find each other easily.

In 2011, the Paris event was held simultaneously at two locations, the plaza at the cathedral of Notre Dame and in the courtyard of the Louvre. More than ten thousand people attended. Other locations have included Versailles, the Pantheon, Trocadero, Pont-Saint Louis and Pont de Solferino.

Dîner en Blanc inspired get-togethers have spread worldwide, with New York, Chicago and San Francisco hosting similar festivities in 2011.

Guests at Le Dîner à San Diego will follow in the spirit of the Dîner en Blanc and are asked to dress elegantly in white, to bring their own chairs, table linens and place settings (also white), food and drink (any color, alcohol is allowed), as well as white bags to carry home any waste.

An important part of Le Dîner’s experience is the code of conduct. Guests are expected to observe a spirit of sophisticated decorum before, during and after. The intent is to provide a spontaneous, fun event with no impact to the surroundings. You show up, enjoy the company of a few thousand fellow San Diegans, then pack up everything and fade off into the night, leaving no trace.

On March 25, 2012 at 9:00 am, participants will be able to register to host a table at Le Dîner à San Diego and invite up to three additional friends or family members. Registration cost will be $25 per person, which covers the venue, entertainment, table rental, and basic comfort amenities.
