Saturday afternoon, 3:00 p.m. I’ve missed lunch and am hungry as hell. But early dinner plans make me hesitant to eat anything too filling. Already on 30th, I stop at Filter Coffee House for a cup of soup.
Filter North Park isn’t so much my home away from home as it is my office. The one place I know I’ll be able to get work done. Several days a week, I spread out my laptop, phone, and notebooks on one of the little square tables. Although there are larger tables in front by the window and a few lounge-y areas with couches, I like the little square tables lined up in the middle of the room in three rows because they’re all flanked with two high-backed chairs that create a private little nest of sorts.
Today, I get lucky with my all-time favorite table, left row in the back, next to an outlet. The place is busy, but most people sit alone at tables with their laptops, so the chatter is minimal. I do, however, have headphones and music to make my isolation complete.
When I'm working, Ashley's is the only voice I'll remove my headphones to hear. She also makes a mean pizza bagel.
The soup today is Veggie Posole, made by the Decker Brothers, a local soup dealer, if you will. The kale, carrots, and hominy in a tomato base with “Mexican spices” (as it reads on the Decker Brothers website) is a welcome combination of subtle sweet (from the carrots, I think) and spicy on this cold, overcast day.
The portion is a tad skimpy, but it’s only $3.95 and comes with a roll. Besides, I’ve already declared I don’t want to get full. In the end, the soup and a giant steaming bowl of English Breakfast ($2.50) work together to tide me over ‘til dinner.
For other light fare, I recommend the hummus plate ($4.85), served with pita triangles, cucumbers and carrots.
If you’re hungrier than that, the paninis ($6.95) are good too. My favorite is the Lyla: chicken breast, mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, sun-dried tomatoes, and pesto. Mid-mornings, on the other hand, often call for a breakfast sandwich ($4.95). I take mine on a cheese bagel with bacon.
Filter also serves desserts, coffee, smoothies and other blended drinks.
Total bill: $6.76
