Late-night Gaslamp discovery: heading down F toward Horton Plaza and the buses, thinking about stopping in at Café Lulu for one of their delish coffees with the free chunk of chocolate, when I notice something.
Place before Lulu’s, the Indian place, has gone. Now, brand-new colors (cream, orange, and brown) and a new sign...well, a totally different restaurant. It’s called “Bite Me” (423 F Street, 619-255-1700).
Just open. But, uh oh, just closing. For the night.
Still, Danielle, behind the counter, gives me a menu, and the manager, Dutch House (yes, his real name) tells me they’re part of Lulu (they also own Toscano down on the bottom of Fifth, turns out).
“We’re doing Mediterranean,” he says. “And each dish comes in two sizes, bite size and full-plate size. But even bite size will fill you up.”
The “I” in the name is drawn as a loaded kebab spear, and kebabs form the heart of the menu.
Donor beef goes for $8.95 in the bite size, which means wrapped in flatbread; or $11.95 in the plate size, which includes rice and a shirazi (no lettuce) or tabouleh side salad.
But you can pay just $4.95 and get hummus with a pile of pita bread; or a half-size Mediterranean salad, also $4.95.
Danielle says the most popular dish so far is the Greek-style chicken ($7.95/$10.95).

Not tonight. Guess I’m going to have to come back. Maybe start off testing their baklava ($2.95).
