Blame Erin for this. Our good buddy is off to San Francisco. I asked what she was gonna miss most about San Diego. "Dirty Del's," she said. No hesitation. "It made the Village a neighborhood. It was our Cheers."
She's talking about East Village and the little pub Brian "Dirty Del" Delprino started straight after graduating in biz from SDSU.
What I like about them is their happy hour. It always seems to be the beckoning when I've just missed a bus. And talk about Two-Buck Chuck! Two-buck Buds are good from four till seven and ten till closing every night, plus all day Sundays.
Plus, food-wise, nachos for $3, Dirty Dogs $4, and "small sandwiches" $5. Or, if you're really hurting, a bowl of peanuts for $1. (If you're flush, try the Diego sandwich, $7 or $9 -- kinda luscious with turkey, bacon, avocado, provolone, and veggies on ciabatta.)
But the best is, well, they remember you. People talk like you're old buddies after a couple of glugs. Yes, the sports screens are there, but most of the time they're just moving, burbling wallpaper.
