Frankie "The Bull" Terzoli (one of those cooking contest chefs, I never can remember the show name because, uh, I find these shows appalling) is back in action again. A charming, extroverted host, he opened a good barbecue in the Morena district (Bull's, still operated by his ex-partners) but there was trouble about the booze license, so he disassociated himself. Next he tried opening a New Orleans-style restaurant on the doomed site of The Better Half (where no good restaurant seems to survive. It's across the street from the grave of the late lamented Chilango's).The food wasn't perfect, but Frank has put in some time cheffing in the Lafayette area (the bridge between Cajun and Creole) and his cooking was zesty and not embarrassing. Again, no booze license came soon enough to save it (although a parking lot would've helped even more.) .
Well, hoorah, hooray. He's now top toque at Proud Mary Southern Bar and Grill in a Ramada Hotel near Qualcom which already has the precious license. (It's 5550 Kearny Mesa Blvd., ramadasandiego. com..) The menu looks enticing. I want to bet on The Bull, because we have so little good Louisiana food left in SD -- Magnolia closed and Bud's moved up to the suburbs. Review to come soon, but feel free to beat me there.
