Found! Best Staycation BBQ

What is this duck doing swimming around in this fountain at nine at night?

He’s just one of the summer crowds who make business boom for the resident café in ’Diego’s best-hidden park – Campland on the Bay (2211 Pacific Beach drive), at the top end of Mission bay.

Resident duck, one of hundreds here for the bread-tossing summer crowds

The Hungry Wolf (858-581-4220) would get business if it just made peanut butter sandwiches, 'cause they're the only cafe in the camp (that I've seen).

But actually, they have one of the best barbecues in town (that I've tasted, and I ain't no fanatic).

Alvin the manager brought his recipes from Texas, and with them a sweet Texan sauce that’s perfect for chowing down in this little make-believe community of RVs and tents and kids on vacation tearing about with wobbly ice creams.

They’re open from 8:00 a.m. till 9:00 p.m., daily.

BBQ starts around 11:00 a.m. and goes on till they close. The rib plate’s $11.95, with two sides, but the BBQ sandwich is great too, for $7.25.

Best time: dusk, when the palms get silhouetted and the waters lap and glow.

See, Carla? There is a romantic bone in my body.

Careful: Easy to get lost on your way to Campland
