Quiet Time at Infusions of Tea

After two days of clouds and rain, I really needed to take a walk. I also needed to get some office work done, so my destination would require free wifi. Starbucks would be the obvious choice, but I wasn't in the mood. I wasn't hungry either, so taking up space in a restaurant seemed sort of selfish. Then I remembered Infusions of Tea in University City, on my list of "places I really want to try but it's never quite the right time". This seemed like quite the right time.

Infusions of Tea is a pretty, calming place. I like the colors, the spare lines, and the tea bar. The menu lists dozens of white, black, green, silver, flowering, herbal, caffeine and non-caffeine teas and tisanes. I order a yerbe mate ($2.60) and an apple spice scone ($1.95).

Drinking yerbe mate is a national pastime in Argentina, where I first tried it. It's probably an acquired taste, it's very vegetal. It reminds me of freshly mown grass, but I get that while you might enjoy that scent, actually drinking freshly mown grass may not be your cup of, well, tea. Or, more properly, tisane. If made with boiling water, it can be very bitter. Mine is delicious, it reminds me of some types of green tea. My scone is warm, spicy, and has a nice apple flavor. Not too sweet, either. My server says that it's a mix they get from a company in Northern California, but make fresh on the premises using heavy cream. No problem there, I confess to having a few mixes at home that I like.

An hour later, my office work is done, I leave a much calmer person. And, it's finally stopped raining.
