Panthers bring decisive end Knights’ four-year reign
UNIV. OF SAN DIEGO – In its first season in Division V since 1999, Horizon is already back on top. Friday afternoon, the top-seeded Panthers ousted second-seeded and four-time defending champion Foothills Christian 62-40 in the Division V finals at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
“Horizon has always been a powerhouse and we’ve let down for a couple of years,” said Panthers guard Cody Underwood. “It’s nice to be back and we’re bringing the tradition back.”
Foothills Christian (19-11) led by two early in the second quarter when Horizon took control of the game by hitting outside shots. The Panthers made five three-pointers – including four by Underwood – and closed the quarter on a 21-5 run to take a 14-point lead into the half.
“We just have guys with heart on this team that know how to hit shots,” said Horizon head coach Tyrone Hopkins. “These guys get in the gym, they work hard and they put up a lot of shots. This performance was a testimony to their work ethic.”
Horizon (18-11) added to its lead after halftime and had a comfortable 22-point advantage after the third quarter. The Panthers led by as much as 26 in the fourth quarter as they rolled to their first section title since 2008.
“A lot of these guys have never won a CIF championship,” Hopkins said. “These guys came out here and worked hard throughout the season.”
Underwood scored a game-high 22 points to lead Horizon. The sophomore guard that missed almost a month of the season with a back injury broke the back of Foothills Christian with his second-quarter shooting.
“He went through a lot of back trouble in the beginning of the season and he had to sit out three-to-four weeks of the season,” Hopkins said. “To have him step up under the lights was a blessing to see.”
Senior forward Tyler Cross also finished in double figures for Horizon, adding 13 points. The Panthers joined their female counterparts as section champs, as the top-seeded Horizon girls beat Christian Life 61-42 to start the afternoon.
“It’s big for Horizon,” Hopkins said. “We’ve been hoping for years and years that our girls program would step up. This year they stepped up and it’s great for the school, great for our community and everybody that is affiliated with Horizon.”
Foothills Christian was led by sophomore forward Jamal Aytes, who scored 16 points. The Knights saw their streak of four consecutive Division V titles came to an end.
