SCRIPPS RANCH – Coming off its most lopsided loss of the season, No. 10 Cathedral Catholic got a little bit defensive on Tuesday. The Dons stifled Scripps Ranch 47-31 to pick up their first win in the Eastern League.
“It was just playing team defense,” said Cathedral Catholic point guard Mathew Rosenburg. “We worked as hard as we could keeping our hands up and doing what our coaches tell us.”
Tied at 10 after the first quarter, Cathedral Catholic (10-5, 1-1 Eastern) pulled out in front with an 11-2 run to start the second. Using full court trapping and a 2-3 zone, the Dons held Scripps Ranch (8-7, 0-3) to six points in the quarter and led 22-16 at the half.
“We work as hard as we can in practice and as long as we give the best effort we can it is always going to work,” Rosenburg said of the 2-3 zone.
Scripps Ranch quickly closed the gap in the third quarter, scoring the first four points to make it a two-point game. But Cathedral Catholic settled in and built a 34-24 lead headed into the final quarter, where they held Scripps Ranch to six points on their way to a comfortable 16-point win.
“We had a rough game against Lincoln but to come out here and get the win was huge. We just have to keep it going,” Rosenburg said.
Nick Prunty led Cathedral Catholic with 13 points – all in the first half. Rosenburg scored all of his eight points in the second half.
Defensively, Cathedral Catholic held Scripps Ranch to a season low in points and has held opponents to less than 33 points per game on four other occasions this season. Rosenburg said every win is important in a league that includes No. 1 Lincoln and No. 7 St. Augustine.
“Every game is tough, especially on the road. We have to get those wins and do the best we can,” Rosenburg said. “If we keep working we’ll definitely be there in the end.”
Anthony Phillips led Scripps Ranch with a game-high 19 points. The Falcons are winless in three tries in league play.
