Favorite (1) Horizon
A slight drop in enrollment moved Horizon down to Division V this season and the Panthers have risen to the top, earning the top seed after finishing second in the Coastal League. The Panthers don’t have the best record in Division V but have played the toughest schedule, which should pay off in the playoffs.
Sleeper (5) Maranatha Christian
It seemed Maranatha Christian would sink this season after forward Chen Cai transferred to an East Coast prep school, but the Eagles have had other plans. Maranatha Christian has made the last three Division V finals, and four of their six losses this season came to teams with 18 wins or more.
First Round Upset (10) San Diego Jewish Academy over (7) Vincent Memorial
Vincent Memorial finished undefeated in the Manzanita League, but the Scots nonleague schedule was 5-12. San Diego Jewish Academy suffered the opposite fate, winning eight of its first nine games before sputtering down the stretch. The Lions are the only San Diego team to beat third-seeded Calvin Christian and if they can shrug off three losses to end the season, knocking off Vincent Memorial is not too tall a task.
Star Watch Tyler Cross, Horizon, Sr.
Tyler Cross has spent his high school career crisscrossing between Horizon and The Rock, and the Panthers have to be happy he moved back to Horizon before his senior season. The 6’6” forward is one of the biggest perimeter players in the section and has a nice array of offensive moves. Cross is averaging a double-double this season, with 18 points and 13 rebounds per game.
Potential Matchup to See Semifinals (2) Foothills Christian vs. (3) Calvin Christian
On the bottom half of the bracket, a North County-East County semifinal between two teams expected to be rebuilding would be a treat. Both teams feature forwards averaging double-doubles – Foothills’ Jamal Aytes and Calvin’s Jacob Stout. The four-time defending section champs Knights have won their last 12 contests headed into the playoffs and the Crusaders were winners in 10 of their last 12 games.
