Breakdown

Favorite (3) Mount Miguel

Defending section champion Mount Miguel has the speed and athleticism to repeat, starting with playmaking guard Marcus Booker. Expect a lot of tight games leading up to the finals in a bracket without a clear-cut favorite.

Sleeper (8) Santana

Santana finished the regular season as Grossmont Valley co-champs, yet finds itself in the middle of the pack seeded eighth. The Sultans have a lineup full of three-point shooters and could pull an upset or two with a couple of hot shooting games.

First Round Upset (10) La Jolla over (7) Southwest

Losers of eight in a row, La Jolla isn’t exactly storming into the playoffs. But the Vikings have made the section finals each of the past three years and though a title run seems unlikely, an upset of Southwest is slightly more plausible. The Raiders also split with a Castle Park team that La Jolla beat by 40.

Star Watch C.J. Rayford, Mission Bay

C.J. Rayford is one of the biggest players in the division, measuring 6’8” and averaging a double-double for the second-seeded Buccaneers. The senior center is key to Mission Bay’s postseason success.

Potential Matchup to See Semifinals (2) Mission Bay vs. (3) Mount Miguel

Mission Bay finished with eight wins less than Mount Miguel, but the Buccaneers were seeded ahead of the Matadors on the strength of a 65-46 win when the teams met on Dec. 10. This contest would play closer and would match a sneaky good Bucs team against the defending champs.
