Breakdown
Favorite (1) Lincoln
Defending section and state champion has looked every bit the part this season, finishing the regular season with a 25-1 record and ranked both in the state and nationally. Led by UCLA bound senior Norman Powell and athletic swingman Rasean Simpson, the Hornets are far and away the best team in the section and enter the playoffs with section and state title aspirations.
Sleeper (5) Morse
Few teams in the section play faster than Morse, whose frenetic style has the potential to make opponents dizzy. Led by guard Deonte Flowers, the Tigers have the speed and offense ability to catch any team that takes them lightly.
First Round Upset (9) Monte Vista over (8) Scripps Ranch
Scripps Ranch is the only team in the bracket with a losing record to host a first round game, and the Falcons finished 2-10 in Western League play. Before losing both its games in the last week of the season, Monte Vista tied for first in the Grossmont Valley League. Of each of the first round games, the Monarchs have the best chance of pulling an upset.
Star Watch Angelo Chol, Hoover, Sr. / Norman Powell, Lincoln, Sr.
Two of the section’s biggest attractions find themselves in the same bracket. Powell is an offensive highlight machine for the Hornets, capable of a big play on every possession and Chol controls the paint on both ends for the Cardinals with his size and shot blocking ability. Both players are headed to the Pac-12 next season – Powell will play at UCLA and Chol at Arizona.
Potential Matchup to See Finals (1) Lincoln vs. (2) Hoover
A rematch of last year’s entertaining section final, Lincoln and Hoover would meet at USD under different circumstances – with the Hornets as favorites. This promises to be a fast-paced, high-scoring game that will be worth the price of admission.
