Hoover forward Angelo Chol announces his decision to attend the University of Arizona alongside Cardinals head coach Ollie Goulston at the Hoover High auditorium on Thursday
Cardinals senior picks Wildcats over Kansas, North Carolina
SAN DIEGO – The section’s most sought after big man has finally made his big decision. On Thursday afternoon at Hoover High, Cardinals 6’9” senior forward Angelo Chol gave a verbal commitment to attend and play basketball at the University of Arizona next season.
“It was a combination of everything and Arizona had everything I needed,” Chol said. “I was just nervous and thinking hard, and I decided that Arizona was the right place for me.”
Chol chose Arizona before a crowd of 200 friends, family and members of the media at Hoover High’s auditorium. He picked the Wildcats over Kansas and North Carolina, having eliminated Washington and Alabama from contention in the week.
“I just wanted to leave and get a fresh start and be on my own,” Chol said. “I’ve had support my whole life and I am just trying to be my own man. All five schools were really good, so it was a tough choice.”
On the court, Chol is putting the final touches on an outstanding four-year varsity career at Hoover. He ranks second all-time in the state in rebounding and second all-time nationally in blocked shots – including a national single season record of 339 in 2008-2009.
“I feel very confident that Angelo is going to blossom at Arizona and in another year or two people around the country are going to find out who he is,” said Hoover head coach Ollie Goulston.
Chol is 39 points shy of 2,000 for his career, and averaging 23.4 points a game for No. 5 Hoover (22-6) this season. A native of Sudan, the senior has improved his game significantly in his four seasons as a Cardinal.
“I’ve seen the most improvement in his offensive feel for the game, in terms of making decisions, shooting the ball and handling the ball,” Goulston said. “But his overall game has greatly improved and it is coming together at the right time.”
Goulston said Chol’s versatility will be an important asset at the next level. He also praised the senior’s durability, work ethic and ability to learn the game quickly.
“When you have intangibles like that, there really is no limit to what level you can get to,” Goulston said. “I feel very strongly and very confidently in his abilities.”
Arizona has a 21-4 record this season and is ranked 12th in the nation with a roster that includes Jamelle Horne, a 2007 San Diego High graduate in his senior season. Local Wildcat hoop alums include former La Costa Canyon star Chase Budinger, currently with the NBA’s Houston Rockets, who played at Arizona from 2006-2008.
