Foothillers snap Highlanders’ 10-game winning streak
LA MESA – Helix came into its game against Grossmont on Friday needing a victory to claim the Grossmont Hills League title. The visiting Foothillers made sure that didn’t change, upsetting the No. 10 Highlanders 51-47 in a physical game.
“It feels great to beat them in my last time playing here,” said Grossmont senior guard Desean Waters. “I enjoyed it and I am going to remember this for a long time.”
Ahead by three with 20 seconds left after Waters made two free throws, Grossmont (17-8, 6-2 Grossmont Hills) relied on its defense to clinch the victory. On the ensuing possession, Waters stole a pass intended for Helix guard Titus Young and raced down the court.
“I was thinking the whole time that he was going to get the ball, so I had to deny him,” Waters said. “I was playing physical with him and when I saw the ball off the hand, I just looked at my hand and I tipped it.”
Waters was stripped on his way to the basket, but the ball went out of bounds and Grossmont retained possession. After an inbounds pass and foul, Foothillers forward Robby Nesovic made one of two free throws with two seconds left to put the game out of reach.
“Coach told us the whole week we needed to win it on the defensive side and that’s what we did. We stepped it up,” Waters said.
After an even first quarter, Grossmont opened up a seven-point lead midway through the second quarter and led 24-21 at halftime. In the third quarter the Foothillers had a double-digit lead, but Helix (18-6, 7-1) scored the quarter’s last five points to make it 38-33.
“It was a very physical game and a very strong defensive game by both teams,” said Grossmont head coach Frank Foggiano.
Both teams stayed within a possession for the final three minutes, as Grossmont was able to hold off Helix for the win. The loss snapped the Highlanders’ 10-game winning streak, which included two victories over Grossmont.
“We switched our defense up a little bit from the last time we played them,” Foggiano said. “We extended a little bit more on the shooters and we fronted the guy inside (Kenny Keys) and I think that made a difference.”
Grossmont had trouble slowing down Keys, who led Helix with 20 points. The Highlanders struggled shooting the ball, however, making only two three-pointers for the game.
On offense, Nesovic scored 20 points to lead Grossmont, including 13 in the second half. The junior forward had an aggressive offensive mindset, looking to drive on his defender at every opportunity.
“They had a bigger guy on me and I knew I could take him to the basket whenever I wanted,” Nesovic said. “He probably would have done better against me inside, but I was a lot quicker than he was.”
Waters also scored in double figures for the Foothillers, finishing with 11 points. Grossmont has won six games in a row, and trails Helix by one game headed into the final week of the regular season.
