Lancers beat Army-Navy for seventh straight league win
CARLSBAD – Before play began in the Coastal League, it figured to be one of the section’s most competitive. No. 7 Francis Parker has instead dominated the small school league, maintaining a perfect record in its first seven games with a 71-54 win at Army-Navy on Tuesday.
“I think we have the most talent in the league and we play harder than anybody in the league,” said Francis Parker forward Eric Norman. “I feel like we’re far and away the best team in this league and we’re going to continue to show that.”
Francis Parker (17-6, 7-0 Coastal) opened the game with a 12-1 lead and led by eight at the end of the first quarter. The Lancers led Army-Navy 31-21 at the half, after a first half that fell only 15 points shy of the total score in their first meeting.
“We tried to push the tempo and we just made more shots,” Norman said. “Last game we struggled shooting the ball and this game we made our shots.”
Francis Parker extended its lead in the third quarter and kept it thanks to Norman, who scored the Lancers’ final 14 points of the period. The Southern Methodist bound senior hit four three-pointers in the quarter and finished with a game-high 27 points.
“I was feeling it a little bit, but I didn’t really notice until the end of the third quarter how big of a quarter I had,” Norman said.
Army-Navy (13-9, 2-5) scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to make it a 10-point game, but the Warriors couldn’t get closer than that down the stretch. Francis Parker’s 17-point victory preserved their perfect league record with three games remaining.
“We just have to continue to play hard and play as a team and we’ll come out on top,” Norman said.
Guard Dalante Dunklin also finished in double figures for Francis Parker, scoring 17 points. The Lancers got by Army-Navy 7-footer Cheikh Ndiaye in a variety of ways after they had trouble solving him in the first matchup.
“The first game I was trying to just go right at him and this game I had to wait for him to come to me and then go right by him,” Norman said.
For Army-Navy, guards Devin Watson (21 points) and Jonathan Mosley (10) each scored in double figures. The Warriors were boosted by a cadet-filled student section that was boisterous for most of the game.
