Francis Parker’s Norman, Kearny’s Oloya earn MVP honors
CLAIREMONT MESA – For the second straight year, All-Star bragging rights in San Diego are with the North. The North All-Stars beat the South All-Stars 103-100 in the 2011 San Diego Senior All-Star Game on Friday night at Horizon.
“We were definitely the underdogs coming in and it feels good to come away with the victory,” said Francis Parker forward Eric Norman. “We felt like we had something to prove.”
The game was fast and competitive throughout and the North All-Stars led 52-51 at halftime. Neither team led by more than seven at any point in the game.
“It felt like a playoff game, honestly,” Norman said. “It was North versus South and it was a pretty competitive game.”
With eight seconds to play, Otay Ranch guard Alex Perez made a driving layup to make it a one-point game. After Rancho Buena Vista guard Johnny Dee made a pair of free throws the South All-Stars had a chance to tie the game, but a desperation three-pointer from Lincoln guard Norman Powell came up short.
“We just wanted to come out and have fun – it’s the last game for all of us,” Powell said.
Norman earned Most Valuable Player honors for the North All-Stars. The Lancers’ 6’9” forward headed to Southern Methodist finished with 17 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks and three steals.
“My approach was just to play hard and come out here and try to get a win,” Norman said.
On a South All-Star team that included UCLA signee Powell and Arizona signee Angelo Chol (Hoover), Kearny forward Mike Oloya turned in the best performance. The 6’5” Oloya had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and was a physical presence inside.
“I wanted to come out and put Kearny on the map. A lot of people don’t think of Kearny as a really good school for basketball, so I wanted to come and show my capability and what I learned being at Kearny,” Oloya said. “I came out and did what I had to do and I also had fun – that’s the best part about it.”
The series is now tied 3-3, with the North All-Stars prevailing two years in a row.

Powell goes between the legs to take slam dunk contest
Throughout the season, Lincoln guard Norman Powell has provided his fair share of highlights above the rim. But the Hornets star pulled a new trick out of his bag to win the slam dunk contest – a between-the-legs slam that he only converted one time prior to the event.
“My adrenaline was running here, and the crowd got me into it. I jumped as high as I could and I put it down,” Powell said. “It was my tribute to San Diego – all four years being out here supporting me and watching me play at Lincoln.”
Powell defeated Lincoln teammate Javonte Byrd in the finals, who made one of his two dunk attempts. Powell leaped over teammate Kevin Smith – and almost took his head off – on his first dunk of the final round.
“I kind of drifted to the left and that’s why I hit him in the head,” Powell said. “He took one for the team.”
Dee outshoots Larch-Miller in three-point shooting contest
Rancho Buena Vista guard Johnny Dee and Granite Hills guard Garrett Larch-Miller each made 14 baskets in the finals of the three-point contest, forcing a 30-second shootout for the second year in a row. In the extra period, Dee beat Larch-Miller 8-6.
In the first round, Dee made 20 three-pointers (on 23 attempts) to lead all shooters. St. Augustine guard Sean Davey made 17 threes in the first round.
