Brazelton's free throw gives Mount Miguel controversial win
With the Division III title game tied at the end of regulation, Mount Miguel guard Harry Brazelton stood all alone on the free throw line with three chances to give the Matadors their first section title in 42 years. He only needed one.
“To have it be so long and then it’s all on you, it was a great feeling,” Brazelton said. “I just had to step up, block all that out and focus on the shot.”
Brazelton sunk the first of three free throws to give the 1-seed Matadors a controversial 47-46 win over 3-seed La Jolla on Saturday at the University of San Diego. He was sent to the line after being fouled shooting a three-pointer as time expired by La Jolla forward Jack Latta.
“Yeah, he got my arm,” Brazelton said. “I kind of drew it – I bumped into him – but he committed a foul.”
After the game, replays showed that the ball was still in Brazelton’s hands as the clock expired. In addition, Latta appeared to contact only the ball on the shot.
“It was a foul, but it might have been after the clock had gone off,” said La Jolla head coach Kamal Assaf. “But you can’t put yourself in the position to foul a guy like that.”
Foul or not, Mount Miguel (26-6) had to mount a methodical fourth-quarter comeback to just to pull even. After scoring the first six points of the second quarter, La Jolla (19-11) built a steady five-point lead and the Vikings led by seven heading into the fourth quarter.
“In the first half we weren’t moving the ball so well – just one pass and try to get to the rack,” Brazelton said. “In the second half we got more disciplined and worked the ball around.”
Trailing 41-32 with six minutes left in the game, Mount Miguel guard Yuel Hagos hit a three-pointer to move the Matadors within striking distance. From there, Mount Miguel chipped away at the deficit, eventually tying the game with 1:27 to play on two Brazelton free throws.
“They had a couple momentum plays and some three-point shots that went down,” Assaf said. “We fouled a little more than we like and got into foul trouble.”
The game was still tied at 46 when Mount Miguel inbounded the ball to Brazelton with 11 seconds left. The senior guard dribbled around just inside the halfcourt line before hoisting the three-point shot that he was fouled on that sent him to the free throw line after time expired.
“We just had to come out with more intensity and stay composed,” Brazelton said.
In addition to winning their first section title since 1968, Mount Miguel joined the Matadors’ girls team as Division III champs. Before the boys took the court, the Lady Matadors beat Our Lady of Peace in the girls final.
“We called it the doubleheader all week at school,” Brazelton said. “They came through for us, we came through for them and in the end we came through for Mount Miguel.”
Brazelton and Hagos led Mount Miguel in scoring, both finishing with 13. Guard A.J. Stanford added 11 points in the win.
For La Jolla, guard Taylor Davis scored a game-high 25 points and Latta finished with 11. The Vikings saw their run of back-to-back Division III titles come to an end.
“It would have been great to three-peat, but we had a great season,” Assaf said. “We wanted to win this title more than you know.”
