Torrey Pines point guard Max Heller drives against La Costa Canyon guard Drew Kitchens
When No. 2 La Costa Canyon met No. 6 Torrey Pines on Friday night, the difference wasn’t made on the floor – it was made it the stands. In a game that came down to the wire, Torrey Pines’ student section lifted the Falcons to a 48-43 win over the Mavericks.
“Good home court advantage is priceless,” said Torrey Pines head coach John Olive. “Our students and fans have made this a tough place to play.”
With three minutes to play and the game tied at 38, Torrey Pines scored seven straight points to put the game out of reach. Falcons point guard Max Heller capped off the run with a backbreaking three from the top of the key.
“The fans really carried me and I could just feel it tonight,” said Heller, who finished with 17 points.
Torrey Pines (17-2, 3-1 Avocado) has now won their last three home meetings over La Costa Canyon, including a one-point win over the Mavericks in last year’s Division I semifinals. The Mavericks never led on Friday night despite being tied late, simply unable to get over the hump.
“I don’t know what it is about this building,” Heller said. “They have something in their head that they struggle coming in here. It’s a lot due to our fans.”
In a game where every possession was critical, Torrey Pines led by three after the first quarter and by six at halftime. Both defenses clamped down to start the third quarter, and La Costa Canyon guard Matt Shrigley hit a three in the closing seconds to make it a one-point game headed into the final quarter.
“It’s kind of like everything is in slow motion,” Heller said. “In games like this, everything can’t be sped up, it’s got to be in slow motion, and that’s how it felt.
With four minutes left, Mavericks center Dennis Kramer hit an inside shot to tie the game. La Costa Canyon (18-3, 3-1) forced a turnover on the next possession and with a chance to take the lead guard James McCann just missed a twisting transition layup. On the next possession Heller hit the jumper that began the Falcons’ run and sent the home crowd into a frenzy.
“Our kids love to cheer and they sensed towards the end that we were going to be able to pull it off,” Oilve said.
Heller and guard Nick Kerr finished both with a game-high 17 points. Fifteen of Heller’s points came from beyond the arc.
“I hit my first shot, I was 3-for-3 and when I went into halftime, I could feel it,” Heller said.
For La Costa Canyon, Shrigley led the way with 12 points. The Mavericks were held to their second lowest point total of the season and more than 20 points below their season average.
“We just wanted to keep them 50s and below and limit their opportunities,” Heller said. “We wanted to secure the rebound and not let them get multiple shots.”
Nearing the midway point in league play, Torrey Pines and La Costa Canyon are now tied atop the Avocado League with Escondido. The Mavericks and Falcons meet at La Costa Canyon on Feb. 19
“They saw us lose to Escondido and they were feeling really good and this just stirs everything up,” Heller said. “Now that next game at La Costa really means something.”
