With one possession separating Poway and Vista through three quarters, it looked like the game would come down to the wire. Instead, the eighth-ranked Titans scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter and never looked back on their way to an 85-67 win.
“We got more steals and we had more opportunities to score,” said Poway guard Danny Woodley. “We had more opportunities than they did.”
Once Poway (15-5, 3-0 Palomar) extended their lead to double digits, they tightened up defensively to prevent any chance of a Vista comeback. The Titans forced numerous Panthers turnovers to turn their eighth straight victory in to a runaway.
“We kept them under 70, which was our goal at halftime,” Woodley said. “They had a lot of points in the first half.”
The Titans countered Vista’s high-energy attack by getting physical. Poway attacked the boards on both ends and pounded the ball inside whenever they got the chance, getting to the free throw line 33 times.
“Our goal is to get to the hoop as much as we can because we had the size advantage,” Woodley said. “Even if they doubled down, we would just dump it down to Sam (Beeler) and he’s a good foot over everybody.”
The first three quarters of the game were very even, but Vista (15-5, 1-2) could never take the lead. The Panthers tied the game three times in the third quarter but couldn’t get over the hump.
Woodley led Poway with a game-high 22 points and was one of five Titans in double figures. Three games into Palomar League play, Poway and El Camino are its only unbeatens.
“It’s going to be really hard because everyone is going to want to knock us down,” Woodley said. “We got to keep doing our best. We can’t let down.”
For Vista, guard Stephen Que scored a game-high 23 points in a losing effort and guard Sedrick Childress chipped in with 19. The Panthers have now lost two in a row.
